Dahab :
This small Bedouin village still preserving the hippie spirit of the 70's, is full
of atmosphere. The name "Dahab" is Arabic for gold and refers to the region's sandy,
palm lined beaches where the water washed into the sea from the wadis sparkles like
gold. This desert oasis, situated in a sheltered bay, an hour north of Sharm el
Sheikh, is perfect for divers and windsurfers alike. It is also a great place for
those seeking retreat and relaxation. Even in mid summer temperatures remain a few
degrees cooler than further south. Through the 80's and 90's Dahab became key stop
for backpackers seeking a different atmosphere and who favor the basic conditions
the place has to offer; very much like Koh Samui in Thailand or Goa in India. Today,
however, it can also offer better accommodation and good restaurants. Due to the
special rugged topography of the coast, some of the most exciting diving sites in
the Red Sea can be found here, such as the Canyon and Three Pools South Oasis. Many
dive sites are accessible by regular cars, while the more remote ones can be reached
by jeep or camel.
